The Mysteries of Two Series

This post will be focused around the two series of  writer Cassandra Clare. If you are unfamiliar with this mastermind, plotting, devil's offspring of a woman, then you may find this post to be of little interest. Or, if you are in fact addicted to this woman's work like a junky to heroin, and prefer not to hear my theories and spoils, then you, too, may want to leave. Sayonara to you, friends.
For those of you to stick around, let me fill you in on some background information about the two series at hand, The Mortal Instruments, and The Infernal Devices. Both series were written my American author Cassandra Clare. The Mortal Instruments (TMI for short) was the first of the two series, is set in 2007 New York, and follows the story of Clary Fray, her best friend Simon Lewis, and the mysterious heart throb Jace Wayland and his family of human/angel hybrids called Shadowhunters. The series was supposed to be a trilogy, but when Clare announced three more instalments to the beloved series, millions of girls around the world 'skweeeeeeed' in excitement. The first three books (City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass) are now considered as the first trilogy of the series, and the second three books (City of Fallen Angles, City of Lost Souls, City of Heavenly Fire) are the second part, at least in my mind.
After City of Glass was released in 2009, a prequel series (The Infernal Devices) warmed it's engines with Clockwork Angel in 2010. Set in Victorian England, this new series was a big change for readers, however not so much  as to frighten them away. Despite being more than a hundred years before Clary or Jace were even though of, The story of Tessa Grey had a warm, home-like feeling to it. After moving to England from, you guessed it, New York, Tessa is kidnapped the enemy and rescued by, sarcastic drum roll please- Shadowhunters. Although the plot is completely different, not all the characters are. The beauty of magic is that some beings, like Magnus Bane the warlock, can live more than a hundred years. Or five. Readers were also pleased to see reoccurring family names from the first series. This, of course, led to readers comparing the modern characters to their Victorian ancestors, but that is a whole other topic.
After being questioned, Clare commented that TID (The Infernal Devices) would most likely not have a second trilogy like TMI . I believe I read somewhere that one of Clare's people (agent, editor, something) commented "Not with that ending," on the topic of a series continuation. Interoperate that as you may.
So, at the moment, TID stands as a trilogy (Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince, Clockwork Princess).
Now, both series are only one book away from completion. Clockwork Princess is set to be released in March 2013, and City of Heavenly Fire in March 2014. Both are nail biters, both are emotion roller coasters, both are reasons to sleep with a night light again. What will happen to the messed up, inside-out and  backwards situation of Clary, Jace and Sebastian? Who will Tessa choose, Will the pretender, or James the Sickly-adorable? One can only muse, and that, my friends, is what I plan to do.
First off, let's start with TMI, seeing as I read this series first. At the end of City of Lost souls, Clary has saved Jace's life again. This time, she stabbed him through the heart with a flaming sword that belonged to an angel. By doing this, the severed the unnatural bond that Jace shared with Sebastian, Clary's evil brother. Now Jace is back to normal again, no longer under the control of Jonathan (Sebastian?) and Lilith, and they are now able to butcher Jonathan without butchering Jace. Happy ending, mostly. Magnus broke up with Alec for plotting, the Faerie queen is proven to be a lying deceitful wench yet again, and Simon's Maureen has killed Camille, which puts her at the head of the New York vampire clan, technically, if Raphael is killed, or leaves.
My predictions for City of Heavenly Fire are:

  1. Jonathan gets up to his shenanigans again with the second devil's cup, and sets fire to Alicante (Hence the title, City of Heavenly Fire)
  2. Clary and Jace do impulsive, daring things to take action because the Clave will not, and somehow get themselves into the middle of the situation again. Simon might be there too.
  3. Maia and Jordan will go through relationship troubles again. One of them, or both, might die.
  4. Simon and Isabelle will be together at the end.
  5. There will  be a lot of serious discussions between Alec and Magnus, and maybe by the end Magnus will agree to becoming human so he may grow old with Alec. Or one of them could die. Whichever.
  6. Luke and Jocelyn will get married in the epilogue.
  7. Robert and Maryse will have a little chitchat about their broken relationship. It will either end with them making up, or finding a peaceful end. The latter is my best guess.
  8. The Clave will finally open their eyes once the fire is out, and a new, improved way of government will begin to bloom.
  9. Simon will deal with this whole Maureen/Raphael dealio. My guess is that Raphael Will ask Simon for help, and the Daylighter will be torn between what to do. Maureen and Raphael will kill each other and Simon will become the new leader of the New York vampire clan.
  10. Simon will make amends with his mom and sister.
  11. At the very end, Jonathan will die. There will be a moment when he turns good, realizes what a horrible person he is, and prays for forgiveness. But it will be too late, he will die and Clary will cry over him just like Jocelyn did.
And that's all I have to say on that topic.
Okay, moving right along to TID. I actually like this series better than TMI. Don't get me wrong, I love them both, I just REALLY love The Infernal Devices. Anywho, at the end of Clockwork Prince, We have a full fledged love triangle. William Herondale confessed his frantic-mad love towards Tessa, but she has already already agreed to marry Jem (James) Carstairs, an adorable, heart wrenchingly ill gentleman. In order to give Jem his (probable) dying wish, Will and Tessa both swear to never tell Jem of Will's passion. Also, the Magister has gotten away, with his horrible plans still to come, Tessa's brother Nathaniel  is dead, Jessamine is found to be a traitor of sorts and Charlotte is pregnant with Henry's baby. This isn't as nice of an ending as City of Lost Souls, but ten times more intense! I do love Jem and Tessa thought... Team Jem?My predictions...
  1. Tessa will be feeling guilty about her engagement to Jem, as it very much so pains sweet William, the boy she hit over the head with a pitcher the first time they met.
  2. Jem will know that something is up. He's not dumb, people!
  3. Charlotte might have a miscarriage?
  4. The Magister will use some sort of Freak magic to bring Nathaniel back to life. That, or he will cover an automaton with his skin.
  5. In the end, (And this one we have proof for) either Will or Jem will become a silent brother. (Brother Zachariah) I'm hoping it's Jem, but it's more likely that Will will take to the brotherhood once his best friend has died.
  6. Cecily Herondale will be just like her brother, but they will not get along. Jessamine will befriend Cecily, and the girl will help Jessamine realize that being a Shadowhunter is a blessing.
  7. I will probably cry when/if Jem dies. I'm feeling like he will.
  8. Tessa and Jem will not get to marry. Jem will die in battle, not from his illness.
  9. Will will have a long soliloquy about with love for both Jem and Tessa at one point.
  10. Tessa will befriend both Magnus Bane and Camille Belcourt a little more, seeing as they are all immortal.
  11. We will discover the secret of Tessa's birth parents (What they were, warlock, shadowhunter, demon, angel, etc.)
  12. This book will not have an overall happy ending. Just like life.
And  there you have it. I feel like even though I like TID better, I had more accurate guesses for TMI. Probably because I've read more of the latter. And it's modern, so I have a better idea of how people now a days react in situations.
Well, I've rambled on for quite long enough. I'll leave you to ponder. I'll probably think of other 'seemingly' brilliant ideas between now and when the last books of each series come out. I might write them down here for anyone who cares.
Thank you for reading, feel free to comment, rant and yell at me in the comments! :)
